This is a peculiar post, because this story is very well known and I don´t feel like being repetitive and soporific.

Título: La vida de Pi
Title: Life of Pi
Autor / Author: Yann Martel

This novel has a very well known plot, which in essence is the story of a boy living with a tiger in a small boat in the middle of the ocean. If you want more detail, read the book, watch the film, or, alternatively, read the Wikipedia article (link). As the plot is rather well known, there might be some spoilers ahead.

Once we´re done with the plot, lets proceed to discuss Richard Parker. Richard Parker is a tiger. Therefore, he is neither good nor bad, nor is he moral. He is a force of nature, just like the ocean in which the boat sails. Pi, being human, goes through several phases; he will coexist with that force of nature, fearing it and avoiding it, until he begins to master it. And that process is fascinating.

The story has imposible elements and elements that provide verosimilitude. Imposible elements are the protagonist´s name, the "fact" that an orangutan was floating on an unbelievable big bunch of bananas, the flesh-eating algae island and the fact that Pi is simultaneusly a muslim, a christian and an hind, and, really, the story as a whole. Elements that provide verosimilitude are the interview with the japanese businessmen and the encounters between the author and Pi himself. Something noteworthy about this constant oxymoron is that plausibility is boring and imposibility fascinating. The author even makes Pi ponder about this, when he asks the japanese businessmen which story is better, the one in which he survives with a tiger, or the one in which he survives with a mad cooker.

However, even though Pi omits this in his little rumination, in each impossible moment, there are shades of plausibility, and viceversa; Pi even tries to rationalize the existance of the island, with more or less logical arguments. And in the interview with the japanese, Pi is the unbelievable element. This constant juxtaposition of verisimilitud and imposibility somehow manages to trick you into thinking that the story might be based on real events. As I don´t consider myself gullible, I tend to think that this is because the novel is truly magical.

Is the film more magical than the novel? While both are intense and excelent, for me the book is always better than the film. While talking to a friend, she commented that the film had beautiful landscapes, which in the book have to be rendered by the readers´ imaginations, while the book has beautiful prose and deep ruminations, which the film doesn´t.

Something which the film does mantain is the existance of different levels: the experience of living with a tiger, the memories, the narration by Pi of those memories and the manipulation of those by the novelist. To those who take IB History, would Pi´s testimony be a reliable source?

When you finish the last page, you feel an urge to comment it with somebody. Especially, you need to ask which story do you think is the "true one". I think it is the one with the animals, because there is a moment in which Pi recalls that he thinks that he only survived because of Richard Parker. If you have read it, what do you think?

  3. ¡Hola!
Lara
